On Thursday, 30 June, Xiaomi launched Mi Max in an event held in New Delhi. The largest smartphone from company was launched in China earlier this year in May. On 6 June, it will available to Indian customers via flash sales. Registrations for flash sale is going on. You can register for Mi Max on mi.com . Open sale of Mi Max on all partner platforms such as Flipkart, Amazon,etc will begin on 13 July. You can buy Mi Max via Mi store and its partner e-commerce websites from dates mentioned.
The tablet and phablet market has grown since they were launched. Customers who first criticized 5 inch smartphones are now comfortable with 5 to 5.5 inch smartphones. Most of smartphones in market are now 5 to 6 inch. Tablets are now 7 inch plus devices while phablets are 6 to 7 inch smartphones. Xiaomi decided to launch its phablet in market to compete with 7 inch calling tablets below Rs. 20,000 in market. They thinks calling tablets are still in good demand.
Mi Max variants
Mi Max comes in two variants for Indian market
- 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage will cost Rs. 14,999 in India. This variant is powered by Snapdragon 650 chipset.
- 4 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage will cost Rs. 19,999 in India. This is more advanced with Snapdragon 652 chipset. But there are no details about its availability now. Xiaomi told it will be available soon.
Internationally its ships in three variants, especially China as follows
- 3GB RAM/32GB + Snapdragon 650 – RMB 1499 ($230)
- 4GB RAM/64GB + Snapdragon 652 – RMB 1699 ($260)
- 4GB RAM/128GB + Snapdragon 652 – RMB 1999 ($307)
Mi Maxs display & form factor
6.44 inch display will be one of its main attractions. Full HD 1080p resolutions makes the overall ppi of the display 342 which is nice. Watching movies and playing games indoors on the phone is great. Outdoor visibility of the display is somewhat restricted by glare. Thanks to Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection over the display, it is a need for 6.44 inch phone. carrying the Mi Max around will not be a easy task if you want to carry it in your pants pocket. Riding a bike with the smartphone in pocket is not comfortable. You will prefer to carry it in your bag. If you dont carry bag around then, in your hands be holding the device most of time. Its dimensions measures 184.108.40.206mm, and weighs in at 203 grams. It is thinner than many phones at 7.5 mm.
Its body is all metal holding fingerprint sensor at the back in the middle while moving horizontally and vertically a little upside. Placement of camera, flash & build design is also similar to already launched Mi devices. The device is available in three color options named Dark Grey, Gold, and Silver. The smartphone holds 3.5 mm jack, IR blaster and secondary microphone on the top side. Bottom possesses a micro USB (not a USB type C connector) post surrounded by two speaker grilles.
Mi Max Camera, Connectivity & Battery
All variants of the smartphone comes with a hybrid dual SIM configuration, allowing users to place up to a 128 GB micro SD card in the secondary SIM card slot. Yes, it is a dual SIM phablet but you can use only one SIM slot if putting memory card into second slot. It bears a 16-megapixel rear camera that offers phase detection auto-focus (PDAF) and LED flash which seems similar to one found on Mi 5. The phablet also bears a 5-megapixel front camera also on board with 85-degree wide-angle view. Both cameras have an f/2.0 aperture. Mi Max supports 4G LTE with VoLTE, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS/ A-GPS with Glonass, and Wi-Fi 802.11ac with Mimo but it lacks NFC. It has also an IR blaster to serve as universal remote control of gadgets. Also, has other sensors such as accelerometer, gyro, proximity & compass, fingerprint sensor is already mentioned.
The dual-sim phablet is powered by massive 4850 mAh battery, which will allow it to last a full day with heavy usage. With moderate it may pass 2 days on a single charge.
Mi Max OS & MIUI 8
Mi Max runs MIUI 7 on top of Android v 6.0 Marshmallow as of now. But, it will upgraded to MIUI 8 as promised by the company. During the launch event for the Xiaomi Mi Max in India, the company announced the MIUI 8 beta would be available to owners of the following devices: Mi Max, Mi Note, Mi 5, Mi 4, Mi 4i, Mi 3, Mi 2, Redmi Note Prime, Redmi Note 3, Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note, Redmi 2 Prime, Redmi 2 and Redmi 1s. Updates will be available OTA via the Mi Community or MIUI forum. Thr first public beta of new MIUI 8 will be available from July 11. Xiaomi also promised to release the final version by August 16.
