Finding out best WordPress Permalink Structure

Plain structure is never good for SEO, it must always be avoided. It is simply a number, it does not contains any information about the article. 

Permalinks containing dates also not recommended in general. Use them only if you own a news portal which updated very frequently. Dates adds the risk of outdated content, people can easily know this is years old article and nobody is interested in outdated content. It also adds to the length of the permalink. An article can not be published again if date is mentioned. 

Also the numeric structure is similar to plain. Avoid both of these. 

Post name structure is best out of default options, it will be short and precise. Do not forget to add keywords in your post name. Adding category to WordPress permalinks is also a good choice, but use it only if your category names are short & meaningful. Make sure that you are not using a lot of categories and category does not eat up lot of characters. If your category is a good keyword, then add category to WordPress permalinks. It is good practice implemented by many bloggers. It is all up to you to add this or not.

  • %year% – Year of your post, 4 digits. For example 2016
  • %monthnum% – Month of the year. For example 08
  • %day% – Day of the month. For example 01
  • %hour% – Hour of the day. For example 10
  • %minute% – Minute of the hour. For example 25
  • %second% – Second of the minute. For example 15
  • %post_id% – The unique ID # of the post. For example 954
  • %postname% – The title of the post. For example “How to choose SEO friendly Permalink?” becomes how-to-choose-seo-friendly-permalink. This is known as sanitized version.
  • %category% – The name of category. For example SEO . sanitized version of category will be shown based slug.
  • %author% – Name of the author. For example Sourabh becomes sourabh .
